Zechariah 14:9-The Coming King

Zechariah 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

Last Sunday I ended a brief overview of eschatology in the book of Revelation. In a way it was frightening to see God step aside and allow Satan to have greater freedom upon earth during “the Great Tribulation”.

During that time Satan through the Anti-Christ will:

  1. Physically control the entire world (13:1-2)
  2. Gain the worship of the world (13:3-4)
  3. Openly blaspheme God without punishment (for a time) (13:5)
  4. Martyr Christians (13:6)
  5. And cause the whole world to pledge allegiance to him by taking the mark (13:16-17)

When reading things like this its easy to ask “Where is God?” The truth is however that God’s still in divine control. As stated earlier He is allowing Satan freedom for a short time.

When that time of freedom for Satan ends, there is nothing he can do to extend it

Rev. 20:1   And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Notice the weakness of Satan in this passage:

  1. He is captured, and bound
  2. He is thrown into Hell
  3. And cannot escape that place until God is ready to let him out!

Zechariah 14:9 is an encouragement for us because we live in a world where wickedness often does reign. Its easy to become discouraged or bitter towards the Lord as we see Satan seem to win one victory over another.

But we can rest in the fact that someday the short-lived reign of Satan will end, and the eternal reign of our Savior will begin.

Even so come Lord Jesus
