Much of my time as a missionary focuses on ministry (as it should). But it’s important to have a broad definition of the word “ministry.”
When thinking about ministry, certain things come to mind:
- Evangelistic outreach like tract distribution
- Counseling
- Discussion about Scripture (what we refer to as reasoning)
- Visitation
- And Discipleship among other things
Now these things are obviously ministry! But they aren’t the ONLY THINGS that can be defined as ministry.
Ministry is about the development of relationships, or “building a relational bridge” for God’s glory. Most deep ministries can only be accomplished once a strong relationship has been established.
Relationship development expands the ministry definition to include other things we wouldn’t normally think of as “ministry.”
- Small talk
- Doing something enjoyable together
- Working on a project, or job
- Or simply being there….sometimes not even saying a word
Once a week if I have time (usually on Fridays) I play structured games with kids and young people (adults too if they are willing).
The interesting thing is I connect more with them on Fridays throwing a ball around than in our Bible studies during the week. This is because we’re doing something they really enjoy, and look forward to (they get REALLY excited on Friday)!
The Lord has taught me through fun Fridays that sometimes the most powerful ministry is one that builds stronger relationships.
