Missions is Not Qualification, but Dedication

Last weekend I finished the audio version of Endurance: Shackelton’s Incredible Voyage an amazing book about a ship that on it’s way to the South Atlantic, was crushed in ice. For five-months the sailors after abandoning ship drifted on ice-packs, and then trekked over glaciers and mountains before reaching safety.

This powerful story explains a very important truth.

Success isn’t based on qualifications…..

it is based on dedication!

During a Bible conference during February 2023, I heard a sermon entitled; the least qualified, the most dedicated from 1 Corinthians 15:9-10. The preacher described how Paul didn’t have the primary qualifications to be an apostle of Christ like the others, but the grace of God led him to be more dedicated than those who were qualified.

1Cor. 15:9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

His application is many of us focus far too much in life on “qualifications” such as background, education, or personal strengths. While these are important, dedication is far more important! Often those who are extremely gifted fail because their level of dedication or endurance is far too low.

It isn’t the gifted that succeed, it’s those who keep getting up!

Ernest Shackleton (the captain of the endurance) didn’t succeed because of his skill since there were better captains. He succeeded because of his refusal to give up! With every setback (and there were many) he refused to let his optimism and confidence be shaken.

Ministry and the Christian life is much like the story of the Endurance. There will be many setbacks, failures, and challenges. Sadly far too many of the qualified throw their hands up in the air and quit because “it’s too hard!” But those who are dedicated will truly finish the job.

So get back up dear friend and try again

God is honored by those who plod faithfully
